About the museum
The museum unit occupies a former outbuilding of the Arraial Ferreira Neto, in Quatro Águas, next to the Ria Formosa. For many years this arraial was the centre of tuna fishing with a fixed trap net (almadrava) in Tavira: from March to September the fishermen and their families lived there during the tuna season, and the settlement could host more than 400 people.
The set of houses, workshops and warehouses was rehabilitated and converted into the Eco Hotel Vila Galé Albacora, in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. To preserve the memory of the activity, a museum space was set up in a former building of the complex, which is now open to the public with free admission.
The exhibition shows a reconstruction of the almadrava, historical data on tuna fishing, traditional clothing and tools used in the work, as well as old documents of the Companhia de Pescarias do Algarve (Algarve Fisheries Company). A film documents the capture of the tuna.
