About the museum
The Fábrica das Histórias – Casa Jaime Umbelino (Factory of Stories – Jaime Umbelino House) is a cultural space of the Câmara Municipal de Torres Vedras that does not aim to be a museum in the traditional sense. It is a place for producing words, memories, ideas, music and images, open to artists from different backgrounds, who are invited to reinvent the heritage donated by Jaime Umbelino.
Jaime Umbelino (1916–2007) was a teacher, educator and writer, and collaborated with various charitable institutions. He donated to the Câmara the contents of his house, a varied collection of furniture, paintings, sculptural pieces, china and weapons that reflects his taste as a collector.
The two-storey building is considered a property of municipal interest. The façade is symmetrical, with stone-framed openings, and the interior is surprising for the small spaces that branch off the central hall. The education service organises activities based on stories chosen each year and works closely with schools.
