About the museum

The Museu Municipal de Torres Vedras opened on 28 July 1929, in the hall of the Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics (Irmandade dos Clérigos Pobres), next to the Igreja de São Pedro. It was founded by a group of citizens, among them Rafael Salinas Calado, and its first collections came from deposits by parishes and private individuals. In 1944 it moved to the former building of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, where it gained more space for its pieces.

In 1969 the archaeologist Leonel Trindade took over the direction and organised the exhibition into thematic units: archaeology, the Peninsular Wars, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, early Portuguese art, azulejos, the municipality and epigraphy. Under his direction the museum also became a research centre, above all in archaeology, with more than five decades of collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute. In 1997 the Câmara Municipal gave the institution the name Museu Municipal Leonel Trindade.

Since 1992 the museum has been housed in the former Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Convent of Our Lady of Grace), whose church and convent complex is classified as a property of public interest. The collection ranges from archaeology and sacred art to palaeontology and contemporary painting, with units devoted to the history of the municipality and to the Lines of Torres Vedras. The museum also coordinates a network of interpretation centres, such as those of the Castle, the Jewish Community and the Lines of Torres Vedras, the Castro do Zambujal and the Ponte and Santa Cruz water mills (azenhas).
