About the museum
The Centro Interpretativo da Máscara Ibérica (CIMI) opened in 2016 in Lazarim, a village in the municipality of Lamego known for its Entrudo (carnival) and for hand-carved wooden masks. It was created to enhance, promote and publicise the heritage linked to masks and winter rituals.
It is housed in a building that was the manor house of the Viscounts of Lazarim, organised into several rooms. The exhibition brings together costumes, masks and objects of the winter masquerades and Entrudo festivities of Portugal and Spain, and the centre also devotes attention to research on the meaning and origin of these rituals, in contact with the local communities.
Throughout the year the space hosts temporary photography exhibitions and presents the customs and traditions of the village. The centre also has a library and sometimes organises workshops and demonstrations of woodcarving.
