About the museum
The Museu de Lamego was created in 1917, by decree of 5 April, in an 18th-century building that had served as the Episcopal Palace. The palace was rebuilt from 1776, on the initiative of Bishop D. Manuel de Vasconcelos Pereira, and passed into the possession of the State in 1911, together with its furnishings, following the law separating the State and the Churches.
The initial collection comes from the furnishings of the former palace and includes painting, tapestry, furniture, goldsmiths’ work, liturgical vestments and means of transport. Later, chapels lined with gilded wood carving, archaeological finds, ceramics, prints, drawings and photographs were added, with pieces from the 1st to the 20th century.
The Flemish tapestries woven in Brussels in the first half of the 16th century, the panels painted by Vasco Fernandes (Grão Vasco) for the cathedral of Lamego, the 17th-century azulejo panels and a medieval tomb chest are classified as national treasures. The museum has been closed since 24 May 2025 for renovation works financed by the PRR.
