About the museum

The Museu do Douro aims to represent the cultural and natural heritage of the Douro Demarcated Region, a living, evolving cultural landscape recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its headquarters are in the Casa da Companhia, in Peso da Régua, one of the most emblematic buildings in the history of the wine region, dating from the 18th century. The building was rehabilitated to house the museum, which opened on 20 December 2008, and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2017.

The permanent exhibition “Douro: Matéria e Espírito” occupies the central space of the building. The visit circuit also includes temporary and medium-term exhibitions, the Espaço Armanda Passos and a technical wing, normally closed to the public, dedicated to the conservation, restoration and digitisation of the collections.

The museum has a restaurant, a wine bar, a terrace with a view of the Douro river and a shop. In an adjoining modern building clad in slate panels, the education service operates. On the same street is the Crivo, a space dedicated to the arts and traditional crafts, housed in a former bakery.
