About the museum
The Núcleo de Arte Sacra do Museu Municipal de Alcochete (Sacred Art Unit of the Alcochete Municipal Museum) opened on 21 November 1993, following an agreement between the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and the Câmara Municipal and extensive restoration works on the Misericórdia church, a building of great historical value.
The exhibition route shows the quality of the painting collection. The highlights include the altarpiece of the high altar, with Mannerist painting and carving, featuring six panels by Diogo Teixeira, and the Misericórdia banner, one of the oldest in the country, attributed to Francisco de Campos. There are also fourteen processional banners with the cycle of the Passion of Christ, attributed to André Gonçalves, and other paintings from the 16th to the 19th century.
The sculpture collection includes three pieces in polychrome limestone from the 14th and 15th centuries, from the excavations of the former church of Santa Maria da Sabonha.
