About the museum
The Museu do Bombeiro Manuel Valdés Sobral is housed in the former barracks of the Voluntary Firefighters of Valença, on Largo 7 de Julho, inside the Fortress of Valença. It belongs to the Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Valença (Humanitarian Association of the Voluntary Firefighters of Valença) and is run by the Municipality, which includes it in the Municipal Museum Network.
The Portuguese inventory of architectural heritage links the site to the Military Hospital of Valença, a field hospital founded in the mid-17th century and entrusted to the Order of São João de Deus (Order of St John of God), and records its current use as a museum.
The museum also houses a collection of miniature toys owned by João Eduardo Teixeira.
