About the museum
The Núcleo Museológico de Valença of the Museu Nacional Ferroviário (National Railway Museum) is next to Valença station, on the Linha do Minho line, and occupies the former locomotive shed. It is part of the network of railway museums run by the Fundação Museu Nacional Ferroviário (National Railway Museum Foundation), which maintains several units around the country.
The collection shows rolling stock from the 19th and early 20th centuries, among which are CP locomotive 23, dating from 1875, a Sf no. 1 salon coach built in France in 1888 with seats for five passengers, and a Sf 5004 salon coach from 1885 with nine seats. There is also a carriage, a van and a pedal quadricycle. The operation of the section between Valença and the Spanish border, via the international bridge, was contracted in March 1886.
According to the foundation's website, the unit is temporarily closed, with no reopening date given.
