Museu Alvarinho

About the museum

The Museu Alvarinho, run by the Municipality of Monção, opened in 2015 in the Casa do Curro, an eighteenth-century building in the centre of Praça Deu-la-Deu, the town's main square. Its purpose is to introduce visitors to the “cradle of Alvarinho”, the territory and its people, and to promote the Alvarinho brand of the Monção and Melgaço sub-region.

The museum presents itself as a living museum, which promotes knowledge of wine products, the built heritage of the region and the traditions and know-how of previous generations. The exhibition unfolds across several rooms, devoted to the territory, the history of Monção's wines, Alvarinho, the grape variety, the terroir and the producers. It combines content with technological resources so that it can be experienced through knowledge and the senses.

The visit includes a space dedicated to wine tasting, which allows visitors to deepen their knowledge of the sub-region's Alvarinho. The overall aim is to encourage the protection of heritage and local identity.
