About the museum
The cathedral of Santa María de Tui, Romanesque in style with Gothic elements and battlemented towers with a fortified look, was begun in 1120 and consecrated in 1225. The cathedral museum occupies the chapel of Santa Catalina, which Bishop Fray Anselmo Gómez de la Torre remodelled in the 18th century, raising its height and recording the work with his coats of arms.
The museum displays pieces from the cathedral treasury: a collection of chalices and sacred vessels, among which stand out the so-called “de Coco” and “de los Evangelistas”, a richly decorated 17th-century processional monstrance, a seated Virgin with medieval features known as “La Patrona” and the old lectern of the choir. Some works were shown at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition and at the 1991 exhibition “Galicia no Tempo”.
The archaeological section is in the cloister and the chapter house, with remains from the excavations of the Romanesque choir, a medieval sarcophagus, Visigothic epitaphs and old cathedral grilles.
