About the museum
The Igreja de Santo Amaro is one of the oldest churches in the city of Beja. Many authors point to an early Christian foundation; more recent studies propose a date in the 10th century, during the Islamic period, and construction by Beja's Mozarab community. Over time it underwent successive remodellings, which gave rise to the present building, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
In the 1990s the national monument began to host a museum project dedicated to the Visigothic period, considered by some authors to be the most significant collection of this period in Portugal.
