About the museum
The Church of the Misericórdia in Ferreira do Alentejo was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2014. It houses the sacred art unit of the Municipal Museum of Ferreira do Alentejo, dedicated to the religious and spiritual activity of the local Santa Casa da Misericórdia, since 1516, and to the charitable and hospital work it carried out in the municipality from the 15th century to the present.
The building stands out for its Manueline portal, decorated with pine-cone finials, anthropomorphic figures and rope motifs, which originally belonged to the former Church of the Espírito Santo, demolished in 1911. A 16th-century polyptych also came from that church and is now displayed in the Municipal Museum.
