About the museum

The Museu – A Estação opened on 1 June 2021 in the former passenger building of the Pinhal Novo railway station, completed in 1935. It occupies the central part of the ground floor and the concourse. The town grew around the station, the largest railway junction south of the Tagus, and the railway, which reached the site in 1858, shaped its history and the re-establishment of the municipality of Palmela in 1926.

The exhibition tells the story of the station and the local railway community, with objects and documents donated mainly by former railway workers and their families, and once again displays the azulejo panels on the façade. It also seeks to interpret the urban growth of Pinhal Novo, the waves of migration since the mid-19th century and the traditions of the caramelas, linked to the agricultural colonisation of the Rio Frio estate. In the concourse, visitors can sit and watch the trains go by.

The museum continues to collect documents, objects and memories from railway workers and other residents.
