About the museum

The Museu de Arte e do Colecionismo de Cantanhede (MACC; Museum of Art and Collecting of Cantanhede) grew out of the donation to the municipality of a collection assembled over decades by the physician, writer and collector Cândido Ferreira, a native of Febres: about 800,000 pieces in around 100 collections. Housed in the historic building of the Casa do Capitão-Mor, in the centre of Cantanhede, it opened on 29 September 2024 in the presence of the President of the Republic.

The museum arranges the collections in large areas, including archaeology and world cultures, the history of money, painting, sculpture and decorative arts, sacred art, postal history, radio and sound-reproduction equipment and other forms of collecting, in the logic of an archive and a showcase. The route evokes the atmosphere of a collector's house, with painting from Romanticism to Modernism, furniture from the 16th to the 20th century, numismatics from ancient Greece to Portugal and its former colonies, and postcards and stamps.

The MACC has education services, with free guided visits by prior booking, and a room for temporary exhibitions.
