About the museum
The Museu da Escrita do Sudoeste (MESA) was created in 2007 in Almodôvar. It is a municipal museum dedicated to the oldest writing known in the Iberian Peninsula, more than 2,500 years old. For some time it operated temporarily in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and, in June 2024, it returned to its original seat on Rua do Relógio, after extension works and a new museography.
The exhibition brings together inscribed funerary stelae and various archaeological objects associated with the Cónios and other Iron Age peoples who lived in and interacted with this region. It presents the evolution of writing and of written knowledge in an educational way, and it is a benchmark of Portuguese archaeology.
