About the museum
The museum is housed in a 16th-century building on Praça da República, which was the Paços do Concelho (town hall) and later a prison. According to tradition, D. Sebastião spent the nights of 8 and 9 January 1573 there, during his journey through the Alentejo and the Algarve. When the council moved to the Convento de São Francisco, the building was turned into a prison.
Today it houses the municipal museum dedicated to Severo Portela, a painter born in Almodôvar who donated part of his estate to the municipality. It brings together the artist's paintings, drawings and studies, whose works are held in museums and public buildings throughout the country. On the ground floor, the exhibition “Sapateiro – Memórias de um Ofício” (Shoemaker – Memories of a Craft) presents the footwear and the craftsmen who made it in the town's many workshops and shops.
