About the museum
The Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado was founded in 1911, when the former Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes e Arqueologia was split into two museums. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga kept the works made up to 1850, and the new museum received the later ones, installing itself in the Convent of São Francisco, next to the Academy of Fine Arts.
The convent complex was severely affected by the 1755 earthquake. After the fire that struck Chiado in 1988, the museum reopened in 1994, with a renovation project by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. In 2015 it also took over the former Civil Government building of Lisbon, on Rua Capelo.
The collection of Portuguese art includes painting, sculpture, drawing, video, photography and installation, and allows visitors to trace the history of Portuguese art from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. Represented artists include, among others, Columbano Bordallo Pinheiro, José Malhoa, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Almada Negreiros, Mário Eloy, Lourdes Castro and Helena Almeida.
The exhibitions present the period between 1850 and 1975, from Romanticism and Symbolism through the ruptures of the early 20th century to Modernism and conceptual art. Works from 1975 to the present day are shown in temporary exhibitions.
