About the museum
The Museu de Almada, housed in the Casa da Cidade, on Praça João Raimundo, in Cova da Piedade, is the municipal museum of Almada. Its collection brings together objects and documentary and audiovisual records that illustrate the history of the territory, between the Atlantic, the Mar da Palha and the River Tagus.
The permanent exhibition “Entre Dois Mares e Um Rio. Almada, 3 mil Anos de História”, opened in September 2021, covers three thousand years of history, marked by successive cultures and traditions. It tells of the rural, manufacturing and industrial past, from the settlement of the first communities to the diversity of the 20th century, and highlights the municipality's distinctiveness in its relationship with the proximity of Lisbon.
The museum also presents temporary exhibitions and a regular programme for families, schools and organised groups, including guided visits and activities on Saturdays. The De Raiz restaurant-café operates in the Casa da Cidade. The Museu de Almada has other visitor sites in the municipality.
