About the museum
The Museu de Vila do Bispo – Celeiro da História opened on 20 January 2024. It occupies the former granaries of the Federação Nacional dos Produtores de Trigo (National Federation of Wheat Growers), built in the 1950s and used until the 1980s, which the municipality rehabilitated. The investment exceeded €2.9 million, of which around €1.98 million was funded by the CRESC Algarve 2020 programme.
The exhibition traces the collective heritage of the municipality: its geological formation and dinosaur ichnofossils, the oldest traces of human presence identified by archaeology, its history with its events and personalities, underwater archaeology of shipwrecks and naval battles, local biodiversity and the ethnographic memory of the “Gentes do Cabo” (People of the Cape). Among the pieces is a restored cereal-sorting machine from 1958.
The complex also includes an educational service, an auditorium, a documentation centre, a shop, a café and a terrace. In 2025 the museum received the award of the Portuguese Museology Association for education and cultural mediation projects.
