About the museum

The Museu do Mar e da Terra da Carrapateira was built from scratch in the village of Carrapateira, in the southernmost part of the Costa Vicentina, an area rich in remains from the Mesolithic to the Arab period. The village serves as a microcosm of the riverside habitats of the region.

The permanent exhibition “O oceano, a nossa terra” (The Ocean, Our Land) is based on a collection of objects gathered with the exceptional contribution of the local population, in line with the museum's motto: “para todos e por todos” (for everyone and by everyone). Heir to the new museology, it is a thematic and social museum of identity, open to human geography, ecology and local development.

The narrative is led by the whale “Jonas”, who gives voice to the story. The route covers, among other themes, the sea of Carrapateira, the stranded whale and whaling, the treasures of the sea, the formation of the village from its first Berber nucleus, the work of the land and the life of the sea, from coastal fishing to line fishing and the gathering of goose barnacles and seaweed.
