About the museum

The Museu do Santuário de Fátima was created in 1955 by Bishop D. José Alves Correia da Silva, through the letter “Museu-Biblioteca do Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Rosário da Fátima”. Its aim was to preserve the traces of a past that was beginning to recede and to bring together a historical, artistic and ethnographic collection, with testimonies of the international pilgrimages of the Image of the Pilgrim Virgin and relics linked to the Apparitions and their protagonists.

The permanent exhibition, formerly known as “Fátima Luz e Paz”, opened in August 2002 and is housed in the Rectory building of the Sanctuary, within the complex of the Casa de Retiros de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The museum route invites the visitor on a journey “da guerra para a paz” (from war to peace) and “das trevas para a luz” (from darkness to light).

The objects on display are mainly ex-votos offered to Our Lady of Fátima by anonymous pilgrims and by public figures, including popes. The most emblematic piece is the Coroa Preciosa (Precious Crown), which contains the bullet that struck John Paul II. There are also collections of sculpture, including a 17th-century Indo-Portuguese Christ, of textiles, with vestments linked to the papal pilgrimages, and of jewellery.
