About the museum
The Museu Judaico de Belmonte opened in 2005 and is presented as the first museum of its kind in Portugal. It is dedicated to the Jewish community of Belmonte, which for centuries kept its religion secret, resisting the edicts of expulsion of the Catholic Monarchs, the decree of expulsion or conversion issued by D. Manuel I and the action of the Portuguese Inquisition.
The museum project focuses on the crypto-Judaism of this community and on its traditions and daily life. The space was remodelled in August 2017 and has since undergone further renovation works.
The museum brings together objects from the Middle Ages to the 20th century that were used by Jews and New Christians in daily life or religious practice. It is part of the Rede de Museus de Belmonte and of the Rede de Judiarias de Portugal – Rotas de Sefarad.
