About the museum
The Corredor da Cobra Municipal Saltworks, in Armazéns de Lavos, has as its main aim to promote, publicise and maintain salt production. This small municipal area brings together support facilities that interpret various themes linked to salt: an interpretation centre, the Salt Warehouse, the pedarium and a bird observatory. The site forms part of the Santos Rocha Municipal Museum as one of its decentralised units.
The interpretation centre answers questions such as what salt is, salt in the world, the evolution of salt production, the technology of the salt pans, natural heritage and biodiversity, and cultural heritage and traditions. The warehouse shows the exhibition “O Papel (do) Salgado”, an iconographic collection on the biodiversity characteristic of the salt marshes of Figueira da Foz. The Rota Pedestre das Salinas (salt-pan footpath), about 5 km long, lets visitors hear and experience the salt-marsh ecosystem.
In 2020 the unit took part in the project “Quinta Ciência Viva do Sal”, funded by the EEA Grants, which rehabilitated the coastal heritage of the saltworks and created new spaces such as the Salina Criativa and the Open Lab. In 2023 the traditional knowledge of artisanal sea-salt production in Figueira da Foz was inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
