About the museum
The Banícke múzeum v Rožňave (Mining Museum in Rožňava) was founded in 1902 on the initiative of a mining and metallurgical company, with the support of the town of Rožňava and donations from Františka and Dionýz Andrássy. The purpose-built museum building was completed in 1905, and the first exhibition on mining, metallurgy and minerals opened to the public in 1912. In the same year the Mestské múzeum v Rožňave (Town Museum in Rožňava) was also established, and the two institutions merged in 1940.
The war years had a major impact on the museum, and the building served other purposes until 1956. The first post-war exhibition on the mining and metallurgy of Gemer opened in May 1956. The museum grew most strongly in 1974–1985, when further buildings and exhibitions were added; in 1981 an exhibition on the nature of the Slovak Karst opened, and in 1999 the Historical Exhibition.
The Historical Exhibition, a presentation depository, is housed in the former Mark leather-processing manufactory from 1782. The collections are arranged by material groups and comprise over 6,000 objects from the fields of domestic culture, folk culture, numismatics, crafts and militaria. The museum's administration is also based in this building. The museum is a cultural institution of the Košice Self-Governing Region and, besides this building, runs the Gallery and the Sentinel Experience Centre.
