About the museum
Krásna Hôrka Castle originally arose as a medieval fortification above today's Krásnohorské Podhradie. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it was owned by the Andrássy family.
The beginnings of the museum use of the castle go back to the second half of the 19th century. After 1857 Count Juraj Andrássy set up a family museum in several rooms, using the castle's original furnishings and the preserved weapons and armour; it was opened to the public in 1867. After 1904 the museum section was extended, and Count Dionýz Andrássy established the Františkino múzeum (Františka Museum) there, in honour of his wife Františka, with her personal belongings.
In 1961 the Presidium of the Slovak National Council declared the castle a national cultural monument. Today it is managed by the Slovenské národné múzeum – Múzeum Betliar. After a devastating fire in 2012 the castle is being reconstructed and is closed to the public.
