About the museum
The Zážitkové centrum Sentinel was created by reconstructing the buildings of the Baníckeho múzea in Rožňava in 2015–2017. It comprises the Expozícia baníctva a hutníctva Gemera (exhibition on mining and metallurgy in Gemer), the exhibition Čas pary (Time of Steam) in the Baníckeho múzea, the Banské pracoviská (mining workplaces), the Expozícia prírody Slovenského krasu a priľahlých oblastí (exhibition on the nature of the Slovenský kras and adjacent areas) and a courtyard with mining machinery and a mine railway. It was partly opened to the public from the Night of Museums and Galleries in 2017.
The Expozícia baníctva a hutníctva Gemera is installed in a purpose-built building, which is the oldest structure in Central Europe built for mining and metallurgy museology. It presents the history of mining and metallurgy in Gemer from prehistory to the present, with work tools, means of transport and surveying and lighting equipment. The Čas pary exhibition shows the steam lorry Škoda Sentinel and the steam roller Aveling & Porter from 1883.
The Banská doprava (Mine Transport) tour, open since 8 April 2022, presents a working model of a cableway, a 3D map of Gemer and mining workplaces; in the courtyard visitors can ride the mine train to a diorama of the Alexander adit. The exhibition on the nature of the Slovenský kras is housed in the building from 1904, known as Františkin útulok.
