About the museum

The Čiernohronská železnica (Čierny Hron Railway) is a historic forest railway with a track gauge of 760 mm, built in 1909. It served to transport timber from the forests in the Čierny Hron valley. Today it is run by the non-profit organisation Čiernohronská železnica, n. o., as a technical monument and tourist attraction; according to the operator, the admission fee is a contribution to the restoration of a cultural monument.

Historic steam and diesel trains run on the line, with restored passenger carriages, some of which take the form of summer observation coaches. The rolling stock comprises four steam locomotives, five diesel locomotives and a diesel railcar, M21 004. The staff consists largely of volunteers who continue the activity begun in 1983. The restored section to the village of Dobroč was opened in 2012.

At Čierny Balog station a small museum of forest railways is open all year round, with exhibits from the construction and operation of forest railways in Slovakia and in the Carpathian arc. Steam and diesel locomotives and carriages are displayed on the station tracks, so the whole station works as a living open-air museum.
