About the museum

The beginnings of museum work in Upper Nitra are linked to the provost Karol Anton Medvecký, on whose initiative the Múzejný krúžok severnej Nitry (Museum Circle of Northern Nitra) was founded in 1924. In 1930 the Múzeum hornej Nitry (Museum of Upper Nitra) began its activity, but after 1950 its collections became part of the Krajské múzeum v Bojniciach (Regional Museum in Bojnice).

Museum activity in Prievidza was renewed in 1985, when the Hornonitrianske múzeum was established. The basis of its collection consisted of collections transferred from the museum in Bojnice. The museum moved several times and, for example, operated in part of the Piarist monastery and on Nová ulica, and for a long time had no exhibition premises of its own. Today it is housed in a building on Košovská cesta, and its founding body is the Trenčín Self-Governing Region.

The collection holds more than a quarter of a million objects from archaeology, ethnology, history, botany, numismatics, zoology and geology. Among the most valuable items are Middle Palaeolithic finds, the inventory of Lusatian cemeteries, a silver treasure from a Roman grave, a Romanesque sword from the 11th century, folk costumes and glass paintings. The permanent exhibition Historiae superior Nitriensis ended in May 2023; currently the exhibition Osobnosti múzea (Personalities of the Museum) is on display.
