About the museum
The Uhoľná expozícia (Coal Exhibition) in Handlová is a branch of the Slovenské banské múzeum (Slovak Mining Museum) and focuses on the history of industrial coal mining in Slovakia. The exhibition, titled Cesta uhlia (The Coal Route) with the subtitle Uhoľné baníctvo na Slovensku (Coal Mining in Slovakia), is designed as an experience museum that tries to bring visitors closer to at least part of the atmosphere underground.
The basement and ground floor are set up as underground spaces in dark colours, with original mining machines. On the first floor visitors learn about transport, ventilation and lighting in the mine, coal preparation and mining education; this section uses traditional museum methods and includes educational activities for children and young people.
The EKO workshop offers children creative activities through which they become familiar, in a playful way, with the extraction of mineral raw materials, its significance and its impact on the landscape.
