About the museum

Devín Castle stands on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Danube and the Morava. The site was settled as early as the Late Stone Age; later there was a Celtic settlement, a Roman watch post and an important Great Moravian stronghold. In the 13th and 14th centuries it served as a royal border castle, and in the 15th century it was greatly extended by the Garajovci family.

In 1809 the castle was blown up by Napoleonic troops. In 1961 it was declared a national cultural monument, and today it is managed by the Bratislava City Museum.

In the caves of the upper castle there is a permanent archaeological exhibition, Hrad Devín in the 13th–20th centuries, with more than three hundred finds that show how the castle was built, who owned it and what events took place here. A second exhibition presents the geological development of the castle rock, including remnants of the Tertiary sea with marine sand and its fauna.
