About the museum
The foundation of today's museum was the Dokumentačné centrum chorvátskej kultúry (Documentation Centre of Croatian Culture), which was established in 1996 within the Slovak National Museum – Historical Museum. The unit focused on the history and culture of the Croatian minority in Slovakia and from the outset aimed at an independent minority museum with nationwide competence, similar to the other minority museums in the SNM network.
The independent Múzeum kultúry Chorvátov na Slovensku (Museum of the Culture of Croats in Slovakia) was established in 2006. A new building opened to the public in the old part of Devínska Nová Ves on Istrijská Street, in the courtyard of a former fruit and vegetable cannery and a joinery workshop. The museum collects, professionally processes and presents documents on the history and culture of the Croats, from their arrival in present-day Slovakia to the present.
The permanent exhibition on the upper floor follows the Croatian settlement from the 16th century, ethnic identity and language, folk architecture and housing, costume, folk art and family customs. The museum also runs the nearby Múzeum starej Devínskej (Museum of Old Devínska), opened in 2015 in the restored building of a former bakery and inn, with an exhibition on life in Devínska Nová Ves in the 19th and 20th centuries.
