About the museum
Litterra was created in Revúca in the historic building of the First Slovak Grammar School (Prvé slovenské gymnázium), a national cultural monument. The building was erected from collections and donations at a time when the original school had become too cramped for its pupils. Later the First Slovak Literary Grammar School operated here, focusing on literary creation and journalism; after a time the building stood empty.
From the idea of using its atmosphere a cultural and educational centre was born. The original building received a modern extension, which serves as the main entrance and presents itself as a place full of contrasts: a historic façade, contemporary architecture and advanced presentation technologies. It is run by the non-profit organisation Litterra, n. o.
The permanent exhibition Múzeum príbehov, written as Múze/um, follows how stories were told, recorded and preserved across generations: from oral tradition through the first books to the digital novel. Unlike classic museums, the exhibits can be touched and visitors can take part in creating a story. In the attic pavilion Hviezdoveda visitors set off on a journey through space, and at the start of the exhibition a pavilion is devoted to sound and the spoken word.
