About the museum
The First Slovak Grammar School arose in Revúca on the initiative of representatives of the Slovak national movement, among them Štefan Marko Daxner. It was solemnly opened on 16 September 1862 in the Evangelical church; its first director was August Horislav Škultéty, and teaching began on 17 September 1862. The school was meant to help educate a nationally conscious Slovak intelligentsia. It operated for twelve years and was closed in 1874.
The museum is housed in the original historic building of the grammar school, a national cultural monument, and is run by the Mesto Revúca (Town of Revúca) as a contributory organisation. It is devoted to the history of the grammar school in 1862–1874 and to the history of the town of Revúca, which in the 1840s to 1870s was one of the centres of the Slovak national movement.
