About the museum
The Museum of the Kysuce Village is the open-air ethnographic exhibition of the Kysuce Museum in Čadca. It stands in the Chmúra valley in the cadastral area of the village of Nová Bystrica, in the Vychylovka part, within the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area. Preparation of the exhibition began shortly after the founding of the Kysuce Museum, and the foundation stone was laid on 11 October 1974.
The priority was to save the most valuable monuments of folk architecture from the villages of Riečnica and Harvelka, which were to disappear with the construction of the Nová Bystrica reservoir. By 1981, when the first part was opened to the public, 22 of the 69 planned buildings had been erected. The exhibition shows folk architecture and the way of life in Kysuce in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century.
Most of the buildings come from the abandoned village of Riečnica, others from Oščadnica, Korňa, Dunajov, Harvelka or Klubina. Preserved are log residential houses and farm buildings, a water mill with a saw, a chapel from Zborov nad Bystricou and a cemetery with metal crosses. The site also includes seasonal shepherds' dwellings (cholvárky) and small fields that show the three-field system of farming. From May to October, thematic Sunday programmes with demonstrations of traditional crafts and customs are held at the museum.
