About the museum

The gallery was founded in 1981 on the initiative of natives and friends of Kysuce, JUDr. Anton Blaha, and twelve visual artists, who had organised the 1975 exhibition “Pozdrav umelcov rodnému kraju” (Greetings from the Artists to Their Native Region) and donated 66 works as the foundation of the collection. The first exhibitions opened on 27 November 1981 in the manor house in Oščadnica.

The neoclassical manor house was built in 1909–1910 for the estate administration of Count Ballestrem; the manor house with its forest park has been a national cultural monument since 1973. Its predecessor was a wooden farmstead from the mid-18th century. In 2020–2022 the gallery, together with the Žilina Self-Governing Region, comprehensively modernised the manor house as part of a cross-border project: exhibition spaces were added in the attic, along with a new terrace and a step-free entrance.

The gallery, which has a regional remit, manages more than 3,000 collection objects, prepares about five exhibition projects a year and offers three permanent exhibitions. For its 40th anniversary it opened the exhibition Lumen Nature, which originated from a gift by Anton Blaha and his wife.
