About the museum

The Múzeum tatranskej kinematografie a fotografie is housed in the reconstructed log-built Vila Alica in the centre of the settlement of Starý Smokovec in the High Tatras. Since June 2015 it has been the home of a new private Slovak museum, which introduces visitors to the past of the Tatras, when the still camera and the movie camera were not yet part of every tourist's equipment.

The year-round permanent exhibition captures the life, atmosphere and transformations of the Tatras as recorded by photographers and filmmakers since 1870, and also offers a view of the development of photographic technology from the late 19th century. A separate section is devoted to the works of personalities of Tatra cinematography and photography, such as Karol Divald Sr., Juraj Weincziller, Milan Legutky and Viliam Malík.

The permanent exhibition is complemented by photo exhibitions on current and commemorative themes, for example on the Tatra tramway, on Jiří Wolkr, on Starý Smokovec or on women who photographed the Tatras. For schools and groups the museum prepares tours with a practical demonstration of historic equipment and screenings of short documentary films.
