About the museum
The museum's origins go back to the second half of the 19th century: in 1873 the Hungarian Carpathian Society, the first tourist association in Hungary, was founded in Starý Smokovec. Besides tourism it devoted itself to scientific and educational work too. Interest in the natural environment and the monuments of the Tatras and the Podtatra region led to the establishment of the museum. Today it is a cultural institution of the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
The museum is seated in Vajanského street in Poprad. The archaeological exhibition The Prince from Poprad and His Tomb presents a find of European significance from October 2005, which came to light during the construction of the Poprad – Matejovce Industrial Park. Research in 2005 and 2006 was led by the museum in cooperation with the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) in Nitra and German partners from Gottorf Castle in Schleswig.
The renovated premises house the exhibition Poprad and Its Surroundings in the Mirror of the Ages, which in five parts presents the settlement of the area from prehistory, the social and economic life, and the natural environment of the town. The museum also has a branch in Spišská Sobota, which has been closed for reconstruction since September 2024.
