About the museum
The first paintings for the future gallery were bought in 1951 by the Krajský národný výbor (Regional National Committee) in Košice. The first exhibition under the name Tatranská galéria took place in July 1959 in Vila Alica in Starý Smokovec, and the gallery was officially established in May 1960 by a resolution of the municipal national committee in Starý Smokovec. In 1966 it moved to Poprad, and since 2002 its founder has been the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
In 1992 the gallery obtained from the town of Poprad, on long-term lease, the dilapidated building of the former steam power station; it opened its first exhibition there in May 1993. The building with its chimney was declared a cultural monument in 2003. After a reconstruction financed mainly by the Prešov Self-Governing Region, the gallery moved into the repaired building in 2009.
The gallery's collections have been systematically supplemented since the 1950s; they contain works by the founders of Slovak modern art, drawings and graphic prints, and regional and East Slovak art.
