About the museum

The Múzeum Ždiarsky dom was established by the municipality of Ždiar in 1971 after the model of the old Ždiar wooden houses, in order to present the culture of this Goral village to visitors. Today, together with the photo gallery, it is managed by the civic association Spolok goralského dedičstva, which preserves the cultural heritage of the village and the Ždiar folklore.

The collection includes work tools, agricultural implements, typical furnishings of the house and, above all, various variations of the Ždiar costume. Besides the tour, visitors can put on a costume, experience a Ždiar wedding or have their photo taken in costume.

Within the building of the Ždiarsky dom there is a newly opened photo gallery with historical photographs and short films on Goral culture in the past and present. It was created on the initiative of, and from the photo collection of, the folklore enthusiast Peter Michalák (1974–2017), who collected them for more than twenty years.
