Sobášny palác v Bytči

Renaissance Sobášny palác (Wedding Palace) of Palatine Juraj Turzo from 1601 in the castle grounds of Bytča, with a permanent exhibition about his life.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

The Wedding Palace was built in 1601 by the Hungarian palatine Juraj Turzo for festive family occasions, above all the wedding banquets of his daughters. An inscription above the main portal records this, and above it are the coats of arms of Juraj Turzo and of his second wife, Alžbeta Czoborová. The palace is among the most important Renaissance buildings in Slovakia: the ground floor has a large vaulted hall, and the whole upper floor is taken up by a festive hall measuring 34.5 × 12.5 m.

After the extinction of the Turzo line, the Bytča manor passed to the Esterházy family in 1624. The palace burned down in 1647 and was later used for economic purposes; in the 19th century it was rebuilt, and from 1886 it served as the administrative building of the district court. Monument restoration began after 1960.

Today the Wedding Palace is part of the Bytča castle complex, which also includes a Renaissance manor house with a square ground plan, and it is managed by Považské múzeum. The permanent exhibition commemorates the personality of Palatine Juraj Turzo.
