About the museum

The idea of a transport museum in Žilina and its surroundings arose as early as the 1960s. Because suitable premises were lacking in Žilina, in 2009, on the 110th anniversary of the Žilina – Rajec railway line, the idea arose of setting up a smaller museum in the building of the Rajecké Teplice halt. The building was reconstructed, and thanks to support from the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, funds for the exhibition were obtained in 2013.

The youngest exhibition of the Považské múzeum was created in cooperation with enthusiasts of historic motorcycles from the Slovenský Arielklub (Slovak Ariel Club). In 2017, thanks to the Fond na podporu umenia (Arts Support Fund), further spaces of the station were reconstructed and the exhibition was expanded.

Visitors will find panels, period paintings and three-dimensional exhibits on road and water transport up to the 20th century, models of railway vehicles, two offices with signalling equipment, and a model railway layout in H0 scale with the Žilina railway junction from the 1920s. In two rooms are displayed Ariel motorcycles and Czechoslovak motorcycles, including the Jawa, Manet 90 and the Slovak Penta.
