About the museum
Považská galéria umenia v Žiline was founded in 1976 and marked 50 years since its establishment in 2026. It is a regional gallery under the auspices of the Žilina Self-Governing Region, based at Štefánikova ulica.
As the first gallery in the region, and at that time also in Slovakia, the gallery began building a collection of intermedia in the 1990s, above all objects, installations and media art. The first installation entered the collection in 1992, the first video installation a year later; since 2006 the collection has been continuously supplemented with new works.
The collection forms the basis of Prvé múzeum intermédií, a long-term exhibition presenting visual art after 1989, whose content changes at set intervals. The gallery also presents exhibitions of contemporary art, guided tours and programmes for schools and families.
