About the museum
Akvarij Piran is part of the Centre of Science of the University of Primorska, which brings together units that present the scientific research of the university to the wider public. In the aquarium visitors immerse themselves in the underwater world of the northern Adriatic, where around 140 different species of organisms live, among them about 60 fish species.
In the larger tanks visitors can watch shoals of open-sea fish such as sea bass, grey mullet and gilthead bream, as well as shoals of fish from the coastal belt. Conger eels and moray eels look out from the holes in the rocky reef; the smaller tanks hold gobies, blennies and wolf fish, and on the sandy bottom lie soles and stargazers. Seahorses, common sharks, crabs, bivalves, snails, octopuses and cuttlefish are special features. Sponges, cnidarians and echinoderms, such as starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and brittle stars, add colour.
The visits are specially adapted to primary and secondary schools, but individuals and groups are also welcome in the aquarium.
