About the museum
The museum was founded in 2006 by the Zavod za ohranjanje pomorske dediščine (Institute for the Preservation of Maritime Heritage) from Portorož. It stands in the old harbour in Piran, near the Pomorski muzej “Sergej Mašera” (Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum).
The collection focuses on historical technical diving equipment: diving apparatus, suits and helmets, as well as military uniforms and insignia. Since technical development, training and the everyday work of divers largely grew out of military activity, the objects and the archive cover the navies that operated in the Adriatic from 1909 to the present. An important part is also the local history of professional diving.
According to the description by the tourist organisation, old diving suits, hand pumps and pressure regulators from the 19th century are on display, along with equipment of the Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Yugoslav navies, underwater weapons, submarine models and personal items of divers, such as photographs and diaries. In 2017 the museum published a richly illustrated book on diving helmets in Slovenia.
