About the museum
The Ekomuzej hmeljarstva in pivovarstva Slovenije (Slovenian Ecomuseum of Hop Growing and Brewing) opened its doors in November 2009. An important tourist asset for the Lower Savinja Valley, it draws on the tradition of hop growing and brewing that has been alive in these parts since 1876. The name ekomuzej (ecomuseum) comes from the connection with the environment and with people.
The central museum, in a former hop-drying house, is arranged over four floors. Visitors learn about food, clothing, customs, hop products and the tools for growing and processing hops. The collection was created with the help of families who live with hops, and with their documentation, photographs and memories. The offer is complemented by admission and information points in the municipalities of Braslovče, Polzela, Prebold, Tabor, Vransko and Žalec.
Visits are individual or guided; in the museum shop a souvenir can be bought, and after the visit the house beer Kukec can be tasted in the tasting room. A special experience is the VR film “Virtualno doživetje zelenega zlata” (Virtual Experience of Green Gold), shown in 360-degree 3D technology, and the interactive experience “Zvari svoje pivo” (Brew Your Own Beer) is also available. As part of the tourist walking trail Od hmelja do piva (From Hops to Beer), the museum received the Good Travel Seal Platinum sustainability certificate.
