About the museum
Celje Castle is the largest medieval castle in Slovenia. As a fortification on the top of a hill, it has overseen all the traffic routes towards the centre of Celje from afar. The first foundations stood in the second half of the 12th century. It is best known as the seat of the Counts of Celje, the most influential ruling dynasty in Slovenia.
The memory of the past is kept alive by legends, exhibitions and interactive experiences. Two stories are well known: that of Barbara of Celje, daughter of Herman II of Celje and the most highly crowned head in Slovenian history, and the love between Frederick II and Veronika of Desenice, one of the most passionate and tragic stories in Slovenian history.
In the warmer part of the year there are Living History programmes, and concerts and weddings take place in the courtyard. Frederick's Tower is closed for maintenance until further notice, so the exhibition Teater groze (Theatre of Horror) cannot be visited during this time; the works are expected to last until November 2026. Kavarna Veronika operates at the castle.
