About the museum
The museum was founded in 1951 as a department for the history of the National Liberation Struggle within the Mestni muzej Celje (Celje City Museum); in 1963 it became an independent institution as the Muzej revolucije Celje (Celje Museum of the Revolution). It was housed in the building of the former Celje city magistrate (which functioned as the municipal administration from 1830 to 1953) and in Stari pisker, the old Celje prison, where the occupiers shot 374 hostages during the Second World War.
The museum gradually extended its collecting to life after 1945; in 1979 it acquired additional premises, and in 1987–1989 a permanent exhibition on the development of Celje after the Second World War was set up there. In 1991, owing to the broader content, it was renamed the Muzej novejše zgodovine Celje (Celje Museum of Recent History).
Today the museum has the permanent exhibitions “Živeti v Celju” (Living in Celje), on the town and its people in the 20th century, and “Zgodbe mesta” (Stories of the Town); a dental collection with the technical heritage of Slovene dentistry; the portal Ce-NOB on the Second World War in the Celje region; the Fotohiša Pelikan as a place of photographic, technical and cultural heritage; the children’s museum Hermanov brlog; and the memorial site for victims of Nazi violence, Stari pisker.
