About the museum
The museum in Laško was founded in 1907. Its original collection included fragments of Roman tombstones, pottery shards from the Roman and pre-Roman periods, and a collection of artfully made clocks, vessels and antique furniture. Over the years it became the guardian of the rich cultural and natural heritage of the area.
Today the museum is housed in the renovated old market granary on Aškerčev trg. The permanent exhibition “Laško – potovanje skozi čas” presents the history of the town chronologically, from prehistory to the present day, with original cultural heritage objects. The geology exhibition on the surroundings of Laško shows fossils from the Pannonian Sea, from shells and snails to shark teeth, as well as remains of animals from the Ice Ages.
The presentation “Pivovarstvo in zdraviliški turizem” (Brewing and Spa Tourism) continues the story: a craft brewery was set up in 1825 in the former Valvasorjev špital (Valvasor hospice) by Franc Geyer, and Laško beer became famous under its owner August Uhlich, who also bought the spa in Rimske Toplice. For school groups, museum lessons are available on request.
