About the museum
In 1975, within the Dopolavoro Ferroviario di Trieste (railway leisure club), the Sezione Appassionati Trasporti was formed, made up of volunteers interested in the history and technology of the railway. The aim was to give new life to the Trieste Campo Marzio station, built in 1906 as the terminus of the Transalpina railway to a design by Robert Seelig and closed to passengers since 1959, and to turn it into a centre for conserving historic material. The museum was inaugurated on 8 March 1984.
The route was arranged in internal sections, in the large Liberty-style hall of the station, and in an outdoor area with full-size rolling stock: Italian steam locomotives built between 1905 and the First World War, examples of Austro-Hungarian origin, electric vehicles of the 1930s, snowploughs, historic carriages and trams. Among the rooms there were a large H0-scale model railway, a reconstruction of an early 20th-century ticket office and a station master's office.
The museum has been closed since 18 July 2017 for a major restoration led by the Fondazione FS Italiane; the Associazione Museo-Stazione Trieste Campo Marzio, which supports the Foundation, reports that it is not currently open to the public.
